egg-in-nest-box-cr

As someone who grew up with chickens (my parents raised them for both meat and eggs), chicken chores fell on my shoulders.  Sure, while my friends were watching TV or riding their bikes, I was cleaning out nest boxes, gathering eggs, and carrying buckets of feed to refill the feeders.  After a hiatus of not […]

California White: An Eggcellent Chicken for Urban Settings

Whether you have acres or a small backyard, chicken keepers are always searching for a great egg laying breed.  Sure, temperament comes into play.  Some folks may make decisions based on egg color, but for my money… when it comes to selecting an egg laying breed, California White is the one that I keep coming […]

As urban chickens keepers, there is a universal issue that we will all face at one time or another.  A dead chicken.  This raises the question, “What do we do?”   While there are several options, it is generally best to have a plan in place before this event happens.  Keep in mind that city and […]

Welcome to Urban Overalls

I’m Connie. Growing up on a farm in rural Iowa taught me me many lessons: raising chickens, growing produce, enjoying raw milk, how to cook from scratch using whole foods, canning, mending clothes, and the importance of being someone who gives back to the community.

Now, living in an urban setting, I brought my country ways with me. Join us as Mr. Overalls and I share our adventures, recipes, and how-to in our daily lives on our 1/3 acre slice of heaven near the center of town.
