Dairy Delights

Marvelous Mascarpone Made at Home

When I think of creamy, spreadable cheeses, the first one that pops to mind is the Italian classic, Mascarpone.  It has a luscious texture that our conventional cream cheese just can’t replicated.  (I first heard of Mascarpone when I watched the movie Kate and Leopold.  Hugh Jackman’s character, Leopold, prepared breakfast for Kate (Meg Ryan) […]

Cottage Cheese at Home: Better than Store Bought

Grocery stores carry it in their dairy sections in small, nondescript containers. Diners usually have it listed as a side dish or perhaps under a special header such as “Diet Plate”.  But allow me to shed light on an often passed over dairy product.  Folks, it is time to fall in love with cottage cheese… […]

Crock Pot Cajeta: A Goat Milk Delight

Goat milk has been part of my diet for years.  In my kitchen, it typically ends up as chèvre, greek yogurt, paneer, or cabécou.  While those are all wonderful ways to enjoy goat milk, I was searching for something else. Fortunately, someone told me about cajeta and as the saying goes, the rest is history.  […]

Homemade Goat Milk Ricotta

One of the easiest cheeses to make at home (in my opinion) is ricotta.  It has a fresh, milky flavor.  A flavor that is hard to find in commercial, mass-produced brands.  And increasingly so, other ingredients are making their way into the commercially produced brands.  Examples of ‘other’ ingredients include: modified food starch, guar gum […]

Beyond Chèvre: Cabécou Cheese

I consider myself lucky.  On our urban homestead there are chickens, bees, vegetable gardens, mature fruit trees, and a husband who is willing to do chores.  But one of the things that I am most thankful for isn’t something that I can’t simply retrieve from the backyard.  Instead, my husband picks up two quarts of […]

Easy Steps to Making Chèvre at Home

Goats are wonderful creatures, aren’t they? From the time I first laid eyes on a goat, I knew that I was looking at a very special creature. They entertain us with their antics, act as a composting device for our kitchen scraps, provide us with manure that can be used to fertilize garden beds, and […]

Welcome to Urban Overalls

I’m Connie. Growing up on a farm in rural Iowa taught me me many lessons: raising chickens, growing produce, enjoying raw milk, how to cook from scratch using whole foods, canning, mending clothes, and the importance of being someone who gives back to the community.

Now, living in an urban setting, I brought my country ways with me. Join us as Mr. Overalls and I share our adventures, recipes, and how-to in our daily lives on our 1/3 acre slice of heaven near the center of town.
