Raspberry Lemon Jam

raspberries & lemon zest in preserving pan

My raspberry bushes produce a fall treat… another crop of bright red berries.  Since freezing temperatures is something on the horizon, I quickly harvest so my family can enjoy this berry.  But this season, rather than turning the fall crop into wine or a mixed berry jelly, I decide to make an old classic with […]

Homemade Chipotles in Adobo

chipotles added to adobo sauce

You know you love them.  Hot.  Spicy.  Flavorful.  There is just no denying this flavor of the southwest.  And if you have access to plenty of vine-ripe tomatoes and chipotles, you too can make chipotles in adobo rather than buying them at the grocery store. Chipotles in Adobo 14 C. tomatoes, rough chopped 2 C. […]

Some Like it Hot: Jalapeno Wine

airlock

I love southwestern cuisine.  The complex flavors.  The spiciness.  The heat.   One such item that has those characteristics is the humble jalapeno.  Sure… we love it diced into salsas.  Roasted with a cream cheese filling.  And of course… it is a must in some of the green chilis that we create.  Heck… even pickled, it […]

Decadence in a Bowl: 100 Clove Garlic Soup

100 clove garlic soup

One of my favorite foods from the garden is garlic.  Not only is it easy to grow and harvest, but the flavor has me dreaming about those little green shoots that pop up in February.  Oh  garlic… how do I love thee?  Minced into salsa.  Roasted and slathered across a baguette.   Sautéed with scrambled eggs.   […]

washing jalapeños

With harvest season well under way, a particular nursery rhyme goes through my head as I begin to fill my basket with a particular type of produce.  I will give you a hint using the words of Mother Goose: “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. […]

Skip the Bottle, Make Buttermilk Ranch Dressing

It is one of the most popular dressings.  Every restaurant has it on their menu.   It makes celery sticks palatable to picky eaters.  And for the adventurous eater, a fine topping on baked potatoes.  Friends, what I am talking about is buttermilk ranch dressing.  While this is available in grocery stores across the country, it […]

Welcome to Urban Overalls

I’m Connie. Growing up on a farm in rural Iowa taught me me many lessons: raising chickens, growing produce, enjoying raw milk, how to cook from scratch using whole foods, canning, mending clothes, and the importance of being someone who gives back to the community.

Now, living in an urban setting, I brought my country ways with me. Join us as Mr. Overalls and I share our adventures, recipes, and how-to in our daily lives on our 1/3 acre slice of heaven near the center of town.
