Pee Wee Eggs: Tiny Treasures

As chicken keepers, we have encountered them.  Small. Cute. Maybe they were still in the nest box or perhaps  stashed somewhere in the run or under a bush?  Novice flock keepers may scratch their heads and wonder what exactly they are.  But don’t wonder any longer, these pint-sized gems are pee wee eggs. But before […]

Potatoes to Plate: How Research Makes a Difference

In this day and age, our potato choices abound.  Stroll through the produce department of grocery stores or wander from vendor table to vendor table at farmers’ markets to check out the options.  Gone are the days where a single variety dominated shopper’s baskets.  Now you can choose from russet potatoes, red potatoes, yellow potatoes, […]

5 Easy Steps to Using a Percolator

In this modern age of espresso machines, single pack coffee makers, and French presses, there is one device that I reach for over and over again.  It doesn’t rely on steam pressure, special coffee packets or even a particular roast of coffee.  In fact, I don’t think that this device will ever wear out since […]

Quick Guide to Crushing Eggshells for Chickens

Eggshells.  We have them.  Anyone who eats eggs (not the pour-from-the-carton-type-of-egg) has them.  And if you eat eggs regularly, they can add up in a hurry.   And sure, there are sources that cite “10 Best Ways to Use Eggshells” or “Save those Shells for Projects”,  but have you ever seen the process on ‘how-to- crush’ […]

Winter Benefits to a Covered Chicken Run

Believe it or not, […]

When it comes […]

Welcome to Urban Overalls

I’m Connie. Growing up on a farm in rural Iowa taught me me many lessons: raising chickens, growing produce, enjoying raw milk, how to cook from scratch using whole foods, canning, mending clothes, and the importance of being someone who gives back to the community.

Now, living in an urban setting, I brought my country ways with me. Join us as Mr. Overalls and I share our adventures, recipes, and how-to in our daily lives on our 1/3 acre slice of heaven near the center of town.
