Why is My Tree Yellow? Iron Chlorosis Explained

applying soil treatment for iron chlorosis

Spring’s arrival is ushered in by warming temperatures and verdant greens.  But amongst the landscape, you spot some very yellow leaves.  Very.  Yellow.  That particular tree with the extremely yellow leaves is not a species known for that particular hue.  Instead, it should be a typical tree green.  Just what is going on? To sum […]

Don't Fear the Swarm

honey bee swarm

It begins this time of year in early spring.  You may glance over your shoulder or try to peer around hedge.  Could one be over there?  Nope.  Just a grouping of brown leaves.  Wait… what’s that noise?  The hum of a motor?  An overhead light buzzing? You ponder staying indoors for the next month or […]

Natural Finish for Beehives

cedar beehive with linseed oil-beeswax finish

Keeping backyard bees is one of my greatest pleasures.  Sitting on the patio with a cup of coffee in hand, I watch their comings and goings daily.  Foraging bees return with water, pollen, and nectar.  Departing bees head out in a direction based upon the dance they watched in the hive.  In spite of the […]

Perfect in Pink: Flowering Almond

Profusion of double flowers

Spring gently wakes us from our winter slumber.  Her kiss is warm and gentle.  Against our ears, she sighs, whispering verdant promises.  We in turn open our eyes, rubbing away the sleep and memories of snow, cold, and blustery days.   Oh… spring, you are a seductress.  You float heady aromas of freshly turned soil, newly […]

Green Garlic: A Springtime Treat

green garlic ready to harvest

Spring is a heady time of year.  Snow is melting.  Temperatures are warming. Flowers are blooming.  But best of all, the garlic you planted in the fall is up and growing.  Those early green stalks hold much more than the promise of a summer harvest, but they also speak to a springtime delicacy… green garlic. […]

Remove Wax Easily from a Towel

wax melted from towel to napkin

Candles are wonderful.   They set the mood at dinner.  They provide light when the power goes out.  And they even provide aroma.  In spite of these attributes, candles can be messy… leaving wax on surfaces.  One such surface…a cloth towel. If you have ever ended up with wax on a towel, you will understand frustration.  […]

Welcome to Urban Overalls

I’m Connie. Growing up on a farm in rural Iowa taught me me many lessons: raising chickens, growing produce, enjoying raw milk, how to cook from scratch using whole foods, canning, mending clothes, and the importance of being someone who gives back to the community.

Now, living in an urban setting, I brought my country ways with me. Join us as Mr. Overalls and I share our adventures, recipes, and how-to in our daily lives on our 1/3 acre slice of heaven near the center of town.
