French Onion Soup: Vegetarian Version

I am an onion lover.  There are no two ways about it.  Even though they are part of my yearly garden, I never have enough to last through the winter.  But at the end of this last season, I was fortunate enough to get a 50 pound bag of onions from a CSA.   Score!  Now […]

My Dryer Ball Confession: Sometimes You Get Lucky

If confession is good for the soul, it is time for me to admit to something that I still can’t believe that I did.  After all, my actions are reasonable… most days.  Folks, it is time for a true confession. What lead me down this path of confession is Pinterest.  Yes, I am a fan.   […]

Garden Seed Inventory: How to Get Organized

The hustle and bustle of the holidays are behind me.  The tree has been taken down, the ornaments are put away, and all of the cookies have been eaten.  Do I feel blue after the flurry of activity from the past few weeks?  In all honesty, I can say no.  Folks,  I am looking forward […]

How to Cook in a Bean Pot

It was the original crock pot (slow cooker).  Imagine, preparing something savory that took hours to cook down into a luscious, creamy texture?  What device could perform this task?  Folks, it is the bean pot! Don't Trash that Tree! Recycle It Instead

One of the most iconic symbols of Christmas may be sitting in your home.  Perhaps it is artificial?  Or maybe yours is fresh?  People, I am talking about Christmas trees! Every year, between 25 – 30 million fresh (real) trees are sold according to the National Christmas Tree Association.  That equates to a lot of […]

New Life for Old-Fashioned Cooking Measurements

Cookbooks.  I love them.   Each book tells its own story between the covers.  Will I unlock the secrets to a smooth gravy?  Figure how to make biscuits that are feather-light?  Or perhaps read how to make a mayonnaise without it separating in the process? I collect them and read them like novels. In my opinion, […]

Welcome to Urban Overalls

I’m Connie. Growing up on a farm in rural Iowa taught me me many lessons: raising chickens, growing produce, enjoying raw milk, how to cook from scratch using whole foods, canning, mending clothes, and the importance of being someone who gives back to the community.

Now, living in an urban setting, I brought my country ways with me. Join us as Mr. Overalls and I share our adventures, recipes, and how-to in our daily lives on our 1/3 acre slice of heaven near the center of town.
